The Tockleys
Lori starts her own band, The Tockleys, because she can’t get a gig as a drummer any other way. Jude is her vocalist, and she lets him hold a guitar as well. He’s gay, a devout Buddhist, and so clean-living it hurts. Luk plays bass brilliantly, thinks he’s straight, and is a horrible teenager. They make a lot of noise and a mess of their lives while they’re trying to find their own music.

This is Laney. Cathy is too busy to send me anything to put here, so I get to write this. I was at the gritty part of The Tockleys, and Cathy agreed to spend a few days away with me, on retreat, working on a project of her own while I wrestled with my novel. I wrote something like 20 000 words in three days, which can’t have been fun for Cathy, although she was very supportive. Sometime during those days, I said, “I need song lyrics,” with despair in my voice. Cathy handed me her song lyric folder. Until then, I hadn’t realised she even wrote songs. Friends who come on retreat with me, put up with me writing 20 000 words, then give me song lyrics, are the best kind of friends. |

Laney again. I wrote the lyrics to ‘Jackrabbit’ because I couldn’t persuade anyone else to write me an Eighties Australian rock anthem. If you ask me, I might hum the melody line for you. |

Manic Pixie was discovered wandering the streets of Laney’s home town, trying to barter her art for scraps of music. She built up a reputation as a ferocious punk who’d rip out a pen and dash off a gig poster or a CD cover in exchange for half an hour of raw hardcore or thrash. Her career has developed, and she’s now doing book covers in exchange for couch to stay on and a good internet connection to feed her mp3 player with. |

E. A. Pearson plays the violin and writes song lyrics that are supposed to be a secret. She would love to hear how her words sound to other people. |
